Traders of penny stocks are losing an estimated $2 billion a year through widespread fraud in the market of the low-priced securities, a report issued today by a group of state securities regulators said. However, the official SEC definition[1] of a penny stock is a low-priced, speculative security of a very small company, regardless of market capitalization or whether it trades on a securitized exchange (like NYSE or NASDAQ) or an "over the counter" listing service, such as the OTCBB or Pink Sheets.

So when investing in penny stock trade, consider getting a broker. Allot of traders, especially the novice ones, don't even try to put a penny stock that they have come across under their watch list radar hence missing easy to catch positve price advances.

Prices

Prices of penny stocks are very volatile. With GOLD prices hitting record highs, precious metal mining stocks have recently enjoyed unprecedented success.

When there are only one or two market makers, there is a risk that the dealer or group of dealers may control the market in that stock and set prices that are not based on competitive forces. In fact, trading in pennies is highly illiquid, and prices are often manipulated by forces not at all related to the business.

Penny Stocks are by nature cheap yet there are those who want to find the cheapest and most undervalued penny stocks they can find to maximize their investment even more. Penny stocks are a nightmare for every broker, analyst, and financial advisor. Penny stocks are not traded on a stock exchange but are traded in the over-the-counter (OTC) market. While it is true that penny stocks are not easy to sell, investors still believe in investing in penny stock trading because of its huge potential leverage.

Schlumberger's (SLB) drooping price action hasn't deterred bullish investors

You know what? Forget Bear Stearns (BSC). It's that lovable lout Jim Cramer who's really having a bad week. It seems that the whole of the financial blogosphere is piling on Cramer in the wake of his regrettable Bear commentary last week and for once, despite our contrarian nature, we've decided to jump on the bandwagon. In this week's column, we'll explain why Schlumberger (SLB) one of JC's favorite bullish picks looks perfectly poised for a downside move.

We're not perfect, either

Regular readers of this column might remember our bearish stock filter from this mid-January article. Since the column was posted, our highlighted stocks have turned in a performance that we will politely term as "mixed" to spare our own feelings. Kohl's (KSS) has defied our expectations to add 9%, while Virgin Media (VMED) is nearly flat with its January 17 price.

Market rebounds on news of SCIC buy-in

HA NOI It was a giddy day on the HCM City Stock Exchange yesterday, as the VN-Index pierced the recent gloom, rebounding 27.12 points to close at 611.17, a gain of 4.75 per cent.

Trading was more active than in Wednesdays session, with Thursdays turnover hitting VND663.94 billion on a volume of 9.7 million shares. Total securities traded, including bonds and fund certificats, hit a record of 28 million.

The record demonstrated a revival in the interest of domestic investors and the power of the Government to influence the market, said Do Hiep Hoa, an analyst with Thang Long Securities Co, pointing to yesterdays announced decision to allow the State Capital Investment Corporation (SCIC) to invest State funds in the stock market.

"The sooner the SCIC buys in, the better the market will go," said Tran Thi Thu Thuy, an analyst with Nam Viet Securities Co.

Wall St retreats on recession fears

US stocks fell overnight after oil prices and the euro hit new peaks and US economic data fuelled fresh recession concerns about the world's biggest economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 65.86 points (0.54 per cent) at 12,200.53 about 3.02am AEDT and the tech-heavy Nasdaq shed 11.80 points (0.52 per cent) to 2259.68.

The Standard & Poor's 500 broad-market index dropped 4.44 points (0.33 per cent) to 1326.19.

US shares fared better than Asian markets, which plunged following Saturday's Wall Street rout that saw the Dow plunge 2.51 per cent, the Nasdaq 2.58 per cent and the S&P 500 2.71 per cent as bleak news on inflation and consumer spending and corporate worries spooked investors.

"Recession and inflation remain top concerns for traders and investors," Al Goldman, chief market strategist at AG Edwards.
